Google’s AI Overviews will respond to a search even when the input is keyboard mash, a misspelling, or a query with no matching web pages, Search Engine Roundtable reported on October 12. Barry Schwartz showed a made-up string that drew a reply saying the entry looked like “a typo or random keyboard input,” followed by an invitation to clarify what the searcher wanted. Khushal Bherwani flagged the behavior in a post on X.

Schwartz says he does not believe this is new and thinks he has noticed it for some time. He links it to Google’s aim of returning an answer however specific or unusual the query is, and he observes that AI rarely admits it does not know. He also notes Google labeling some of its older search tools and widgets as AI Overviews.

For practitioners tracking AI Overview presence, an appearing block is not proof that a query has real demand or that indexed pages address it. Teams should check whether a block cites any sources before counting it as a visibility opportunity.
