OpenAI added a beta bidding mode to ChatGPT Ads product feed campaigns that optimizes toward conversions while advertisers still pay per click, began testing a carousel that shows several products in one ad, and confirmed Brazil and Mexico get the ad platform within the week. Search Engine Land reported the update on August 7, days after ChatGPT Ads reached measurement parity with Google and Meta on July 27 and began testing ads that open a chat window instead of a landing page on August 3. This wave moves the platform past the measurement catch-up phase and into an active shopping auction.
The new bidding mode, called oCPC, keeps the per-click payment structure but shifts what OpenAI’s system optimizes for, the same logic behind Google’s target CPA and Meta’s conversion campaigns. Advertisers can clone an existing CPC campaign into the oCPC format or convert several at once, which lowers the switching cost that normally slows adoption of a new bidding model.
The multi-product carousel is the more consequential change for search teams. A single ad unit can now surface several items pulled from a merchant’s feed inside a ChatGPT conversation, the kind of multi-item shopping format Google Shopping and Meta’s dynamic product ads already run. Paired with conversion-optimized bidding, ChatGPT Ads now has both pieces that define retail media elsewhere: an auction tuned to purchase outcomes and a shopping surface built to hold more than one product. That combination is a different competitive layer than the organic citations SEO teams have been chasing inside ChatGPT answers.
Measurement gained supporting infrastructure for that shift. A new Triple Whale integration lets advertisers track ChatGPT Ads results next to other channels. Sonar Optimize now feeds OpenAI more reliable conversion data, and Hightouch can push conversion events straight into the platform. Ads Manager also added Pixel validation diagnostics that explain why a specific conversion was rejected and suggest a fix, closing a gap that previously left advertisers guessing when reported conversions did not match their own analytics.
Automatic Advanced Matching becomes the default for every new web pixel immediately. On August 17, OpenAI will turn the same setting on for pixels already running, unless an advertiser opts out before that date. Advertisers already running a ChatGPT Ads pixel should review that setting before the deadline rather than after.
Dynamic URL parameters now attach ad group and campaign identifiers, plus the ad ID, to landing page links automatically. That closes a basic attribution gap manual UTM tagging previously had to cover by hand.
For a search team, the carousel test matters more than any single bidding option. Most of this year’s ChatGPT effort has gone toward earning organic citations. A feed-driven shopping unit backed by conversion-optimized bidding opens a paid lane competing for the same screen, and brands that already maintain a Google Shopping feed hold most of the structured product data this format needs. Ecommerce teams should treat their product feed as ChatGPT Ads infrastructure now rather than a Google-only asset, and confirm feed eligibility before the carousel moves out of testing.
