OpenAI will switch on creative enhancements for every self-serve ChatGPT Ads campaign on Friday, October 30, 2026, and advertisers who want to keep control have to act before that date. Barry Schwartz of Search Engine Roundtable reported the change on October 20 after receiving the notice as an advertiser himself. Search Engine Land reported the same October 30 date on October 21. The email says the change applies to self-serve campaigns already running as well as new ones.

The feature lets OpenAI adapt an ad using the advertiser’s existing ad copy and landing-page content. According to the email Schwartz published, OpenAI may rewrite headlines and descriptions, resize images, adjust destination URLs, and translate ad text. Variations may be prepared ahead of time or created on the fly as a conversation unfolds.

Review is the sharpest point. The notice says enhanced ads can run without the advertiser seeing or approving each version. OpenAI describes the goal as more relevant ads and less work building multiple versions. The notice cites no performance data, so the relevance claim rests on OpenAI’s own description.

The controls are straightforward. Advertisers can opt out before October 30, and the setting stays adjustable in Ads Manager whenever they choose. OpenAI says existing account-level and campaign-level opt-outs will be preserved, and campaign-specific settings take priority over account defaults. Schwartz noted that the toggle already appeared as on in his account.

Early reaction from paid search practitioners was negative. Melissa Mackey wrote on X that her team had paused a ChatGPT Ads test over poor lead quality and was glad it had. Anthony Higman argued that when an ad platform pitches automation as less work, the practical effect is more ad serving in places the advertiser may not want.

This is a familiar pattern. Ad platforms tend to ship automation as the default and place the burden of refusal on the advertiser. The cost lands on teams that are slow to read account emails, because the new behavior starts on a fixed date regardless of whether anyone has reviewed it.

For search teams, the destination-URL setting deserves the closest look. If OpenAI routes clicks to a different page than the one an advertiser chose, landing-page performance, tracking parameters, and conversion attribution can all shift without a campaign edit. Organic teams that supply landing-page content to paid colleagues should expect that content to become raw material for machine-written ad variants.

Before October 30, teams should work through a short list:

Teams running ChatGPT Ads should make an explicit opt-in or opt-out decision per campaign this week, since silence now counts as consent.
