Google Ads introduced an “Overlay on videos” asset optimization for Demand Gen campaigns, Search Engine Land reported on Oct. 9. Anu Adegbola wrote the piece. The setting sits under Asset optimization, next to the “Shorter videos” and “Resized videos” options.
When active, Google generates overlays from an advertiser’s existing text assets and places the key messages over the video. The setting appears to be switched on by default, so accounts that skip a review of their preferences could end up with added text.
Advertisers can disable the overlay on its own, or choose “Disable all” to switch off every available video optimization. Search Engine Land cautioned that overlays may clash with existing designs, cover important visuals or add messaging that departs from the intended creative.
Google also says ads built on image or video assets altered by these tools carry an AI-edited label when served in New York state, India or the European Union. PPC News Feed spotted the change first.
Audit Demand Gen asset settings before launch, since a default-on feature can alter creative nobody approved.
