Google rolled out a new batch of Demand Gen features on Aug. 27, adding direct-messaging ads, deeper travel personalization and general availability for its AI-generated video tool. The update, called the August Demand Gen Drop, builds on hundreds of changes Google says lifted conversions or conversion value by 30 percent on average during the second half of 2025. The additions push Demand Gen, the campaign type that replaced Discovery ads in 2023, further into direct-response territory once reserved for Search and Performance Max.

Google is testing a feature that lets people start a conversation with a brand through messaging apps directly from a Demand Gen ad on YouTube. For lead-generation advertisers, that adds a new conversion action beyond routing users to a website or landing page. Google frames the change as a way to move high-intent viewers into contact with the advertiser without an extra step through a traditional funnel, though the company has not said when the messaging test might reach general availability.

Demand Gen is also getting travel-specific upgrades. Ads will be able to surface local activities, events and real-time offers, and hotel advertising is becoming more personalized so Google can match specific properties to the audiences it judges most relevant. For travel advertisers, that means campaign creative can now reflect what a traveler is likely to book rather than just where they might go, narrowing the gap between a discovery-stage video ad and an actual reservation.

Multimodal Video Creation in Google’s Asset Studio is now generally available to advertisers after limited testing. The tool moves a campaign from storyboarding through finished horizontal and vertical video assets in a single workflow, which matters because Demand Gen spans YouTube, Discover and Gmail placements that each expect different aspect ratios. Advertisers who previously paid for separate production runs to cover those formats can now generate them from one brief.

Google’s 30 percent conversion figure covers hundreds of unspecified improvements shipped over the prior six months, not the features announced this week. The company has not published a methodology, an advertiser sample size or a breakdown showing how much of that gain traces to any single change, including bidding or targeting shifts that could account for part of the lift on their own. The announcement also includes no independent measurement of how the new messaging or travel tools perform once live.

Search Engine Land reported the update as Google continues consolidating campaign types, a period in which the company has pushed advertisers away from standalone Display buying and toward automated formats like Demand Gen and Performance Max. Features are arriving in the campaign type advertisers are increasingly being funnelled into by default, not as one option among several. Advertisers should pilot the AI video workflow against current production costs, and track messaging conversions separately once that feature leaves testing, since folding it into existing conversion counts would make its actual contribution impossible to isolate.
