Google has extended link carousels for developing topics to AI Mode, the conversational search experience, giving publishers a new citation slot inside a surface that previously offered few. Robby Stein of Google confirmed the rollout on X, describing carousels that surface articles and webpages, including a searcher’s Preferred Sources, when a query touches something trending.

The stakes are narrower than the announcement suggests. AI Mode already summarizes and answers directly, so any additional link real estate is a net gain for referral traffic from that surface. But the surface itself remains a small share of total query volume compared to classic AI Overviews and traditional results, so the practical upside for most sites is modest.

Google rolled out the same carousel format for AI Overviews within core Search in June, and this extension applies that pattern to AI Mode’s trending and news-adjacent queries specifically, not to the full range of AI Mode responses. That distinction matters. A carousel appearing only on developing-topic queries means most evergreen informational and commercial queries in AI Mode will not gain new link inventory from this change.

Google has not published click-through data for either implementation. Search Console still does not break out click volume for AI Mode or AI Overviews queries in its generative AI reports, so publishers have no first-party way to measure whether the carousel actually lifts referral traffic from these surfaces. Stein’s post frames the goal as connecting searchers “with original coverage and a range of perspectives,” which is a stated intent, not a measured outcome.

The comparison worth making is to the pre-AI-search baseline, not to last month. Click volume from Google Search fell sharply once AI Overviews and AI Mode began absorbing queries that used to route to a list of ten blue links. A carousel that recovers some fraction of those clicks on trending topics does not restore the volume publishers saw before generative answers became the default experience for a large share of queries. It adds a door back in, on a narrower set of queries, without reopening the room.

For SEO teams the actionable signal is about Preferred Sources, the feature Google referenced directly in the same post as the carousel launch. If a publisher has not evaluated whether their domain is eligible for a reader’s Preferred Sources designation, this rollout is the reason to do it now, since that status appears to influence which links surface in the new carousel. Teams that cover breaking or fast-moving topics, the exact query type this carousel targets, should audit their next ninety days of AI Mode visibility on trending queries specifically, rather than treating this as a change that touches their full query set.

Search Engine Land’s Barry Schwartz reported the AI Mode link carousel rollout on August 26, 2026.
