Business owners are getting notices from Google that Messenger chat links are being placed on their Business Profiles automatically, Search Engine Roundtable reported on Oct. 28. Barry Schwartz said he does not recall seeing Google add m.me links before, so the practice may be new.
The email was shared on X by Darcy Burk, who asked whether others were seeing “a wave” of these automatic updates. Meta runs the m.me shortcut, a compact web address that starts a Messenger conversation with a given Facebook Page. Google does send profile-change emails of this kind, according to Schwartz, but not previously for m.me.
The stake is control over how customers contact a business. A link written by Google, not the owner, adds a chat channel that someone has to answer. Search Engine Roundtable’s post does not say how Google chooses the links, whether owners can remove them, or how widely the change is rolling out.
Owners should check their Business Profile contact fields now, confirm the linked Facebook Page is the right one, and make sure someone monitors its Messenger inbox before customers start using it.
