A Google Maps bug is placing profile pins for some service-area businesses in the middle of the ocean, Search Engine Roundtable reported on September 29. The affected businesses do not list their address publicly.
Dipa Gandhi first raised it on LinkedIn. She wrote that Maps shows the correct service area, but “the profile is showing a PIN marker in the middle of the ocean.” She said she is seeing it on “many profiles,” and other people confirmed it in the comments on her post.
Barry Schwartz recalls a similar episode years ago, when Google dropped businesses in the middle of America. He writes that it is not clear whether Google is aware of the new one. No fix or statement has been reported.
Local teams managing service-area listings should check the pin on each profile and screenshot any misplaced one with a date. Those records help if the problem needs escalating, and they separate a display bug from a genuine listing edit.
