Google released Nano Banana 2.1, its newest image generation and editing model, on October 6, and it is already working in AI Mode, Google’s conversational search experience. Robby Stein, a Google Search vice president for product, announced the rollout on X. Users reach it by opening the Google app and tapping the banana icon beneath the Search box.

Google says the model “outperforms our previous models across the board,” citing improvements in design quality, masked edits, and keeping a subject consistent across images. That is the company’s own assessment. The announcement includes no independent benchmark.

The model has spread through Search in stages, per Search Engine Roundtable. It reached Google Lens a year ago, AI Mode last December, and AI Overviews in July. Barry Schwartz writes that he does not think AI Overviews use version 2.1 yet. That is his belief, not a Google confirmation.

Teams that produce visuals for search campaigns should test the banana icon in AI Mode, since the two surfaces may run different model versions.
