Google is testing a desktop layout that places AI Overview citation cards beneath the answer instead of in the right-hand column, Search Engine Roundtable reported on September 29. This is a test, not a launch.
Glenn Gabe spotted it and wrote, “I’m in an AIO test where the citations are stacked at the bottom of the answer on desktop.” He said the right side bar is gone and a show-all control opens the full list. Inline link icons remain in the answer text. Gabe added that the links look “much more enticing down there.”
Barry Schwartz notes a catch. Until the show-more button is clicked, no cards appear, only the link icons, unless Google expands them automatically. Schwartz says Google tested variations in September 2025 and March 2026.
If this layout ships, seeing a citation could take an extra click. Teams that track AI Overview citations should record where their links appear, right rail or bottom stack, so a placement change is not misread as a visibility change.
