Google’s Tools menu recency filter, the option that narrows results to the past hour or day, stopped filtering anything for several hours spanning Saturday, August 1, into Sunday, August 2. Selecting “Recent” on both Google Search and the Google News tab returned the same unfiltered results a user would see without the filter applied, on desktop and mobile, according to Barry Schwartz at Search Engine Roundtable. No error appeared. The filter looked applied and simply was not, which is worse than an outright failure: anyone running weekend freshness monitoring, newsjacking checks, or time-boxed SERP tracking during that window collected bad data with no signal anything was wrong. Google’s Rajan Patel acknowledged the issue on X on August 1: “Apologies. We’re debugging now and try to get it working ASAP.” He confirmed the fix the next morning: “The team shipped a fix this morning. Appreciate your patience. The weekend slowed things down a bit.” The workaround during the outage was switching from “Relevance” to “Sort by date.” The bug is resolved, but Saturday recency data should be treated as suspect.
