Google shipped three new AI models on Tuesday, and only one of them changed how Google Search itself operates. Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite is now running inside Search, according to a same-day rollout Google confirmed alongside the release. That distinction matters more than the model lineup.

Search Engine Land reported the model swap the same day Google framed the Search use case specifically around agentic search, the multi-step task features Liz Reid, head of Google Search, previewed at Google I/O in May. “We’re entering the era of Search agents, where you can easily create, customize and manage multiple AI agents for your many tasks, right in Search,” Reid said at the time.

Google describes 3.5 Flash-Lite as its “fastest, most cost-effective 3.5-class model, delivering 350 output tokens per second according to the Artificial Analysis Index, also significantly outperforming prior Flash-Lite generations in agentic workflows.” Pricing lands around $0.30 per million input tokens, well below Google’s flagship tiers. Robby Stein of Google added on X that the model “offers stronger instruction following and better understands user intent, so conversations flow much more seamlessly.”

Here is the gap worth naming. Google confirmed 3.5 Flash-Lite is rolling out “within Google Search” and tied that rollout to agentic search in its own blog post. Google did not say whether the same model now sits behind AI Overviews or AI Mode, the two generative surfaces most SEO teams monitor for ranking and citation shifts. Barry Schwartz raised the identical question in his Search Engine Land writeup: Google named agentic search and left everything else unaddressed.

That silence is not a technicality. A model swap under a generative surface has historically preceded visible shifts in how that surface selects, summarizes, and cites sources, because a new model scores answers and weighs sources differently than the one it replaces. If AI Overviews or AI Mode behaviour moves in the coming weeks, teams will have no confirmed mechanism to point to. They will guess, and the guess will usually land on whichever change was most recently announced, whether or not it caused anything.

The rollout also lands next to a conspicuous absence. Gemini 3.5 Pro, the model Google had said would ship by now, was not part of Tuesday’s release. Bloomberg had previously reported the delay was tied in part to coding-related issues inside the model. Google says 3.5 Pro will go broad “soon” and that pre-training on Gemini 4 has already begun. The practical result: Google is pushing its cheapest, fastest model into a live Search surface while its flagship model slips past its own stated timeline.

None of this means Search results are about to shift overnight. Flash-Lite’s stated advantage is speed and cost, not accuracy, and Google’s own framing ties it to agentic tasks rather than summarization quality. But the missing surface-level detail removes the one piece of information a search team needs to separate cause from coincidence.

Search teams should not wait for Google to clarify. Pull current AI Overviews trigger rates and citation patterns for a fixed set of tracked queries now, and log AI Mode’s source selection on the same set, before any behaviour change takes hold. Repeat the measurement in two weeks. Without that before-and-after record, any shift that shows up after this rollout becomes a coincidence nobody can prove, and a budget the team cannot defend.
