Plugin discovery inside ChatGPT runs on its own ranking, separate from web citations. TechCrunch’s Sarah Perez reported on September 29 that OpenAI says it has improved the ranking and recommendation of plugins, both in its directory and when ChatGPT surfaces them mid-conversation. Neither TechCrunch nor OpenAI’s DevDay recap says how that ranking works.

Per TechCrunch, plugin extensions give a plugin a sidebar home, interactive panels, and file viewers, and developers get a new Plugin Creator tool. OpenAI’s recap says ChatGPT is opening up so developers can reach “our collective 1.2B weekly users.”

TechCrunch added that ChatGPT Sites (the lightweight sites people build with ChatGPT) can host plugins. OpenAI is also adding support for the proposed MCP Events specification, for plugin automations.

For SEO teams, a plugin is a listing that competes on signals nobody has published. Brands weighing a build should treat it as a test: ship, then track whether ChatGPT recommends the plugin in conversations that matter. Without ranking documentation, this is a bet, not a playbook.
