Some large sites that lost Search and Discover visibility around September 4 saw it return on September 13, according to reports gathered by Search Engine Roundtable. SEO consultant Glenn Gabe, who has been watching a number of those sites, said several that fell sharply completely surged back. Search Engine Roundtable noted that at least one of them showed the drop and recovery in its own first-party analytics, not only in a third-party visibility tool.

Google has not confirmed an update tied to either date. Forum members at WebmasterWorld separately described Discover traffic declining in early September and recovering over the following weekend, with one poster reporting a drop of roughly 20 percent that eased but did not fully resolve.

Search Engine Roundtable’s aggregate ranking-volatility tracker showed September 4 registering higher turbulence than surrounding days, consistent with the site-level reports. Gabe noted similar swing-and-recovery patterns have occurred before.

Because Google has not acknowledged the episode, sites that saw September 4 losses should check whether Search and Discover metrics have actually normalized before making template or content changes in response.

Search Engine Roundtable, in reporting by Barry Schwartz published September 14, 2026, first documented the pattern based on Glenn Gabe’s analysis and WebmasterWorld forum posts.
