Reddit began a test of advertising on its own search results pages, according to a newsroom post the company published Tuesday, November 3. Participation is limited to advertisers Reddit chose and deemed eligible. Search Engine Journal reported the announcement on Wednesday, November 4.
Reddit says it will track user response and adjust the product as it learns. The post does not explain how participating advertisers were picked, and it does not say whether other brands can ask to join. For now, the test is closed to everyone outside that group.
On targeting, Reddit’s post says the placements “leverage existing ad targeting in search results pages on Reddit, which have high purchase and search intent.” It adds that ads “may appear based on a range of factors, including contextual relevance to a user’s search query.” The company does not name any other factors. That leaves the matching logic partly opaque to the brands paying for it.
The examples in the post are query-driven. A search for “espresso station” could return sponsored beans, cups, or machines, while “home office setup” could bring up desks, chairs, or monitors. The screens shown are from the mobile app. Each features a card marked “Ad” with a product photo, a website address, and a “Shop Now” button. One card sits beneath a summary that cites subreddits as sources, and another is placed between two posts.
The move follows months of executive commentary. Search Engine Journal notes that after first-quarter earnings, Chief Operating Officer Jennifer Wong said Reddit did not “even have ads in certain high growing surfaces like search, for example.” On the same call, CEO Steve Huffman said “Search WAUqs are up 30% year-over-year,” a metric Reddit uses to count unique weekly searchers. On a second-quarter call, Wong called search “a space that we’re eyeing” and said the infrastructure was “already queued up.” She also pointed to Shopping Listing Ads, which bundle several retailers’ products into one module, as a possible format.
Reddit’s post leaves out most of what a media buyer would need. It names no markets, no ad formats beyond the app examples, no pricing model, and no word on whether the test extends beyond the mobile app. It also gives no end date and no schedule for adding advertisers.
The absence of independent measurement matters here. Reddit’s claim of high purchase intent is the company’s own description of its search traffic, and the announcement includes no performance data from the test. Treat it as a sales pitch until results appear.
The stake for search teams is a shift in where product discovery happens. Shoppers who search inside Reddit are now entering a paid environment, at least for the advertisers in the test. A commercial query on Reddit that once returned only organic discussion could now return sponsored product cards beside it. That changes how brands should think about earning visibility in those conversations versus buying it.
Advertisers can ask their Reddit representative if the account was included, and how any search impressions would be broken out in reports. Teams that already invest in Reddit presence should log which of their priority queries show ads once the test widens, so they can separate paid placements from organic mentions in later analysis.
