YouTube is changing its recommendation system to favor original Shorts and cut distribution for channels built chiefly on collecting or republishing footage made by others, Search Engine Journal reported on October 1. Rene Ritchie, YouTube’s Creator Liaison, announced the change in a Creator Insider video.
Ritchie said remixers must add value of their own, “not just VO descriptions of what’s happening on screen, minor technical edits, or template-based bulk changes.” He told creators to contribute their own opinions, explanation, and narrative instead. To share someone else’s video, he suggested the Posts tab, so viewers land on the original upload.
The change covers recommendations only. The video does not mention monetization, and it gives no start date, no timeline for re-evaluation, and no tool for checking whether a channel lost reach. Ritchie did say a channel that moves from re-uploading to original content will have its reach re-evaluated.
Brands that cut Shorts from partner or influencer footage should test whether their edits go beyond narration, small tweaks, or templates. The video does not address Shorts cut from a brand’s own long-form videos.
