Tuesday split into a Google product tightening its own definition of a billable lead on two separate fronts, and a measurement floor that keeps eroding everywhere else, with a genuine counter-current tucked inside Performance Max.
The Billable Lead, Redefined: Google Rewires What Counts As A Lead On Local Services Ads
A call nobody answered is about to become chargeable, and the twenty-second clock that spares phone-tree businesses starts the moment a caller presses a key. Google frames it as fairness for advertisers who show up. It also widens what counts as a paid lead.
- Google Will Bill LSA Advertisers for Some Unanswered Calls From October 1, a Local Services Ads call that goes unanswered during business hours becomes a chargeable lead once the caller has waited 20 seconds, and a qualifying follow-up call after an initial non-charged call becomes billable too. Businesses running a phone tree are exempt unless the caller completes the key press, at which point the 20-second timer starts. Google says new safeguards against robocall and spam-call abuse are coming, without saying what they are. The practical effect is that phone coverage stops being an operations question and becomes an advertising cost: an understaffed front desk now bills at the same rate as a genuine enquiry, on a product where the advertiser already has limited control over lead quality.
Correlation, Not Cause: The Strongest Local Ranking Evidence Comes With A Disclaimer
The largest available dataset tying profile categories to local rank comes from a vendor that sells the software to fix exactly that. Whitespark says outright it cannot prove cause, and the numbers are still worth reading.
- Precise Business Profile Categories Track With Higher Local Rank Darren Shaw of Whitespark analysed 1.8 million Google Business Profiles across 4,209 categories and found an exact-match primary category reaching the top 10 for 12.5% of profiles against 9.2% for an adjacent generic one. Profiles scoring five out of five on a completeness index averaged position 43 against 62 for those scoring zero. Whitespark, which sells local SEO software, states plainly that correlation is not causation here: an owner who picks precise categories is also likelier to gather reviews, post updates and keep a website current, any of which could be doing the real work. That leaves one finding a team can act on today, choosing the exact-match primary category, and a set of others that mostly describe what a well-run listing looks like.
Control Handed Back, Ground Shifting Underneath: One Counter-Current And A Measurement Problem
Performance Max spent years asking advertisers to trust full automation. Now Google is handing back a lever, on the same day the traffic those systems measure stopped meaning what it used to.
- Google Alpha-Tests Advertiser Controls Over PMax Channels Google is alpha-testing a Performance Max control that lets advertisers apply positive or negative adjustments across Search, YouTube, Display, Discover, Gmail and Maps to influence which channels the algorithm favours, with a positive adjustment relaxing the CPA the system will accept there. It is an adjustment to prioritisation rather than a hard budget split, and it is an alpha rather than a rollout. It still departs from the position Google held for years, that advertisers cannot and should not direct how Performance Max allocates across channels. Heidi Sturrock spotted the test on LinkedIn.
- Automated Traffic Passed Human Traffic. Your Logs Don’t Know That Yet Automated requests reached 57.5% of total web traffic in June 2026, and OpenRouter’s figures put agent token consumption at close to five times a human’s on the same task, with more than 85% of that coming from cached context an agent re-reads on every turn rather than anything new. An agent’s request and a human’s page view now land on the same line in a server log while measuring completely different things. Only 5.3% of marketers run dedicated invalid-traffic detection, which means most teams are reading a session count that has quietly stopped answering the question they are asking of it.
Today’s Quick Hits
- Google Ads Adds Gemini Omni Video Generation To Asset Studio Gemini Omni now sits inside Asset Studio, turning a creative brief and brand assets into campaign-ready video through a four-stage workflow, producing both 16 and 9 cuts and exporting straight into Demand Gen, Performance Max and YouTube campaigns.
- Google Auto-Enables Booking For 500-Plus LSA Partners Direct booking in Local Services Ads expanded from roughly 20 Reserve with Google partners to more than 500, switching on automatically for advertisers whose Business Profile already carries a partner booking link. Those bookings count as paid leads, so an advertiser can begin paying for a lead type nobody opted into.
- Google Moves AI Overviews Above Stock Charts For Ticker Queries A query like GOOG stock now returns the AI Overview above the price chart rather than below it, reversing the arrangement seen in June. Barry Schwartz, who verified the change himself, argues the generated summary is less useful than the number the searcher came for.
