Google tightened Business Profile edit reviews and reset AdSense identity verification to zero dollars, a UK regulator put a choice-screen proposal covering AI assistants out for consultation, new vendor data split on how often AI Overviews link out and cite sources, and Google Ads unified AI Max reporting while expanding AI Brief language support.
Cited Yet Uncredited: AI Search’s Link Economy Gets Messier
Two new data points on AI search citations point in different directions today, and neither comes with the kind of scale that should settle strategy on its own.
- AI Overviews Link Out Far More Often, New Peec AI Data Shows Malte Landwehr of AI-visibility vendor Peec AI posted a chart on X showing the share of AI Overviews with in-answer external links climbing from near zero to over 25 percent, without stating a sample size or date range. Barry Schwartz, who reported the numbers, said the trend does not match what he has observed and disclosed a small personal investment in Peec AI.
- YouTube Overtakes Reddit as Top Cited Source in AI Search Meltwater data shows YouTube passing Reddit as the most-cited platform across eight AI systems in August, while a separate Tinuiti study found YouTube’s presence in Google AI Mode citations growing more than fourfold between January and April. OtterlyAI found long-form video drawing 94 percent of YouTube citations, and Scrunch measured citation rates for sponsored videos falling roughly 43 percent within a month of first appearing.
New Clocks, Lower Thresholds: Three Dials Move at Once
A regulator’s proposal, a revenue gate, and a listing edit window all moved today, each changing how much time or money separates an operator from losing control of a default.
- UK Regulator’s Draft Plan Would Let AI Assistants Onto Android Prompts The UK Competition and Markets Authority published a revised, not-yet-final proposal that would add AI assistants meeting its criteria to the choice screens Android devices and Chrome show for default search providers. Responses to the consultation are due October 9, and Google has not had to change anything yet.
- AdSense Now Requires Identity Verification From Dollar One Google’s help documentation now sets AdSense identity verification at zero dollars, down from a prior ten-dollar mark, while the separate address verification check still activates at ten dollars. The update also removes a prior grace period that let publishers with linked AdSense and YouTube accounts verify once when either crossed the old threshold.
- Google Sets A Four Day Clock On Business Profile Edit Reviews A new Google Business Profile help section spells out a four-day window for owners to accept or reject a suggested edit before Google says it may automatically publish the change if other public information, such as the business website, supports it. A separate category of edits needed to meet Google’s own policy guidelines can apply with no notification window at all.
Ads Get New Dashboards And New Defaults
Google Ads shipped two changes today that touch reporting and defaults rather than the auction itself, one expanding language access and the other flipping a bidding switch nobody has to ask for.
- Google Ads Unifies AI Max Reporting, Expands AI Brief To 7 Languages Google Ads VP Dan Taylor said advertisers running AI Max for Search will get one unified report covering the full search ads journey. The Gemini-powered AI Brief tool, in closed beta since May in US English, is expanding into German, Spanish, French, Italian, Dutch, Portuguese and Japanese, with broader availability details still to come.
- Demand Gen Campaigns Now Default To VTC Optimization New Demand Gen campaigns now launch with view-through conversion optimization turned on by default, extending for the first time from YouTube and Discover Feed into Display inventory. VTC conversions remain only partially biddable and still do not appear in the main conversions column, so reported performance can understate what the optimizer is doing.
