Google is now surfacing an interactive character counter inside AI Overviews for searches such as “character counter,” letting users count characters without visiting a dedicated tool site.
The widget was spotted by a user on X and reported by Search Engine Roundtable on September 7, 2026. A static screenshot and a GIF show the counter loading directly in the AI-generated answer block above traditional results.
The feature extends a pattern Google has repeated across utility queries: weather, dictionary definitions, movie and TV show information, mortgage calculators, and emoji lookups have all moved from linked results into on-page answers over the past several years. Each addition removes a reason to click through to a third-party site built around that single function.
Character-counting tools such as wordcounter.net depend heavily on this exact query type for traffic. A single-purpose utility site has little to offer once the answer itself, not a link to it, satisfies the search.
Sites built around narrow utility queries should treat this as confirmation that Google will continue absorbing simple-calculation searches into AI Overviews, and should prioritize functionality and content that a widget cannot replicate.
