Google has widened the data feeding Merchant Center’s Popular Products report, more than a year after the feature first launched. The company disclosed the change through a support document last week, though the underlying update actually took effect in late June.
Google says the report now draws on a broader signal set, extending coverage across every supported region and refining how product and brand popularity gets calculated. Retailers may notice their listed products and brands shift as a result purely because of the expanded dataset, not because of anything they changed.
The same adjustments carry over to the Merchant API and BigQuery exports, so any pipeline pulling this data inherits the new figures automatically. Teams that built dashboards or alerts on top of these exports should confirm nothing broke silently when the underlying numbers moved.
Popular Products cards refresh weekly, and Google notes that newly incorporated metrics can take up to two weeks to fully populate. The announcement includes no independent measurement of how much coverage or ranking actually changed for a typical merchant.
Retailers tracking category rank through this report should expect noisier week-over-week swings for the next two cycles before treating the numbers as a stable baseline.
Search Engine Roundtable’s Barry Schwartz reported the update, based on Google’s support post.
