Google’s message at I/O 2026 was not a product announcement. It was a posture: we ship faster than anyone else, and we will sort out the overlap later.

David Bell, writing for Search Engine Land on May 22, attended I/O as a first-timer and spent the day pressing product managers on questions the main-stage keynote did not address. What he found was telling.

When Bell asked a product manager how Google was planning for long-term ownership of these features given the growing overlap between Search and Gemini utilities, the answer was direct: “Right now, it’s all about velocity.” Three other PMs working on flagship I/O features gave the same answer. Every feature they described had been started and shipped in 2026 alone.

The PM offered a second line that defines the operating philosophy: “The way velocity is achieved is less managerial overhead.” Bell’s interpretation, stated plainly, was that Google’s current mode is get on the board first and reconcile the architecture later.

For search teams, that interpretation has a concrete implication. Gemini and Google Search are both adding features that monitor the web and surface alerts when relevant content appears. In Search, the product is called information agents. In Gemini, the equivalent is Spark or Daily Brief. The functional overlap is visible to anyone who uses both products, and Google’s own PMs do not have a near-term plan to rationalize it.

Universal Cart drew the sharpest reaction from practitioners Bell spoke with. Google’s new cross-surface shopping protocol is designed to let users add items to a single cart across surfaces and complete transactions without leaving Google’s ecosystem. An SEO professional at a large e-commerce brand already implementing the feature described the rollout as “rushed.” For publishers and retailers, the risk is structural: if Universal Cart achieves adoption, Google controls a larger portion of the purchase path, and the merchant’s own checkout becomes a downstream step rather than the destination.

The sharpest contradiction Bell identified sits between two things Google said four days apart. On May 18, Google’s Search quality team published guidance telling publishers to write for humans, not for AI. On May 22, the AI agent team demoed a future in which Google’s own agents perform the browsing, run the transactions, and author new pages on behalf of the user. If AI Mode continues its expansion and agents handle more of the retrieval and synthesis, the audience for human-written content progressively narrows. The guidance and the product roadmap point in different directions, and Google has not explained how it resolves that.

Bell did identify genuine progress in the announcements. Google reported an all-time high in search queries last quarter. SynthID, Google’s watermarking technology, is expanding into Search and Chrome. C2PA content credential verification is being applied to crawl, and OpenAI has signed on as an adoption partner for provenance standards. Those are substantive developments for anyone tracking content authenticity in AI-assisted search.

Still, the field report surfaces a pattern that search teams should monitor. When PMs cannot answer second-order questions, such as what happens when AI Mode alerts go stale or how users will manage overlapping notification systems, it signals that the user-facing complexity has not been fully modeled. Engineers dogfooding models from the command line tend to miss front-end friction that real users will encounter. That friction becomes a support and retention problem before it becomes a product fix.

For SEO practitioners, the practical read is this: Google will keep shipping at high speed, features will overlap, and the content guidance you receive today reflects the Search team’s priorities, not the AI agent team’s roadmap. Watch how the information agents feature evolves in Search Console and in AI Overviews citations over the next quarter, because the velocity commitment means that what ships next may reorder the signals you are currently optimizing for.
