Google has moved AI Mode onto Gemini 3.8 Flash, replacing Gemini 3.7 Flash roughly two weeks after that model shipped, Search Engine Land reported Wednesday, citing Robby Stein, Google’s vice president of product.
Stein said on X that 3.8 Flash is “our most intelligent workhorse model yet,” and pointed to gains in coding tasks, autonomous multi-step workflows, and complex reasoning chains. The model is live now for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers, chosen through the plus icon in the AI Mode model menu. Search Engine Land noted Google will likely extend the model to free tier searchers within weeks or months, following the pattern set by the 3.7 rollout.
Neither Google nor the source publication offered any independent measurement of how the swap changes AI Mode’s answers or citations. That gap matters: a model change under AI Mode and AI Overviews is invisible to publishers, who have no mechanism to attribute a shift in their AI-surface visibility to a backend swap rather than to their own content changes.
Sites tracking AI Mode referral traffic should log the September 2 rollout date as a control point before drawing conclusions from any visibility swings this month.
Search Engine Land reported the rollout on September 2, 2026, citing Google VP of product Robby Stein.
