Google’s John Mueller addressed on LinkedIn why the company publicizes only some of its ranking changes. Responding to a question from Eli Schwartz about why 26 years of algorithm work still requires periodic update announcements, Mueller said Google runs many systems that adjust continuously, most of them automatically, without any public notice.

He said Google reserves announcements for bigger, broader shifts so site owners can distinguish a Google-driven change from a self-inflicted technical issue. Mueller called the tradeoff difficult, saying it is hard to balance transparency against causing unnecessary worry.

The exchange, first surfaced by Barry Schwartz, offers a plain reason why Google confirmed its August 2026 spam update while leaving other suspected changes unacknowledged. Search teams chasing every ranking swing should expect silence on the smaller ones by design.
