Google Business Profile now lets restaurants tag menu items as gluten-free, dairy-free, halal, or kosher, Search Engine Roundtable reported on October 13. The four labels join the vegetarian and vegan badges that already existed.

Google’s Lisa Landsman announced the change on LinkedIn, describing it as a way to cut planning effort for diners with specific dietary needs. Landsman said tagged dishes stand out on a profile when people search Google Maps or Search for a diet, such as “gluten-free dinner near me.”

Restaurants add the badges by opening Edit menu in the profile, choosing an item, and ticking the matching dietary badges. Barry Schwartz of Search Engine Roundtable noted that the kosher label appears to rest on the restaurant’s own word, with little sign of outside certification.

For restaurant clients, the task is a quick menu audit: tag every qualifying dish, and verify each claim first, because the badge is a promise to diners with real restrictions.
