Google is running a U.S.-only test that places ads for certain pharmaceutical products, prescription drugs included, inside AI Mode, its conversational search experience, as well as AI Overviews. Google confirmed the test to Adweek, and Search Engine Roundtable’s Barry Schwartz relayed the details on October 13.
Per Adweek, the test began this month. Participating advertisers get ordinary text and Shopping formats, and those placements carry a “Sponsored” label. Google’s statement describes a test of those two formats that recently widened to cover some pharmaceutical products.
Schwartz asked Google about policy and was told nothing changed recently. Schwartz also searched both surfaces and could not find a pharmaceutical ad, which suggests exposure is narrow. Google has not said how many advertisers or queries are involved.
Health advertisers should treat this as an early signal, not a launch. Confirm whether current pharmaceutical campaigns qualify, and wait for real placement data before moving budget.
