Google is running an experiment that places Shopping ads among organic product listings in AI Mode, Google’s conversational search experience, Search Engine Roundtable reported on Oct. 29. Barry Schwartz confirmed the test with a Google spokesperson, who described it as part of ongoing ad experiments and said every paid listing carries a “Sponsored” label.

Screenshots from Sachin Patel show a header above the product carousel that reads “Sponsored,” “All products,” or both. Schwartz wrote that he could not tell from the images whether items under “All products” are paid. Google’s statement covers the “Sponsored” label only, so the second heading remains unexplained.

Schwartz noted that Google said in October 2023 that it blends ads into organic results, a practice it calls dynamic ad placement. AI Mode looks like the next surface for it.

For advertisers, this is a new paid route into a shopping answer. For merchants with free listings, organic products now share carousel space with paid ones, and a vague heading could blur which clicks cost money. Retailers should compare their AI Mode product visibility against their ad spend over the next few weeks.
