This updates our earlier coverage, “Google Defaults Search and Gemini to Off for K-12 Student Accounts.” Google clarified on X that schools can turn on Gemini, Gemini Notebook, and Search one at a time. A school could therefore enable Search while the standalone AI apps stay off.

That does not produce Search without AI. Google said AI Mode and AI Overviews in school Search will walk students through problems step by step, “so that students don’t get quick answers to schoolwork.” Search Engine Watch cited Chalkbeat, where Chris Phillips, who leads Google’s education work, said a school that wants no AI at all can skip Search.

The pilot runs in select U.S. schools beginning later this month. Guidance switches on when Google’s systems detect certain homework questions. Nothing Google has published yet shows whether homework shortcuts with AI will decline.

For publishers and brands whose content reaches students, AI Overviews will remain a gatekeeper on school networks even when Gemini is blocked.
