Google Search is showing a WhatsApp button in local panel results, letting searchers message a business through the app, Search Engine Roundtable reported on Oct. 7. It shows up alongside the usual action buttons or takes the place of chat.
Sachin Patel spotted it and posted about it on X. Barry Schwartz of Search Engine Roundtable says he could replicate it, and writes that it “might be rolled out fully.” The report does not include a Google statement on scope.
The button builds on earlier steps. A couple of years ago, Google began asking businesses to add WhatsApp numbers to their Business Profile listings. A few months ago, Google added numbers on its own for some businesses.
That history matters for operators. A number you never entered could already be live on your listing.
Local businesses should open their profiles, confirm any WhatsApp number shown is correct, and decide who will answer the messages it invites.
